Do you really know drill bits for wood, metal, and masonry?

Wood drill bits – ideal for woodworking and soft materials – have a very sharp point and coarse flutes. These deep grooves help remove wood chips efficiently, and the sharp point ensures precise positioning for clean hole entry. They are generally softer than other bits, making them suitable for high-speed drilling in timber and plywood.

Metal drill bits (also known as HSS drill bits for steel and aluminum) feature a larger point angle and finer flutes. This design allows effective clearing of metal chips, preventing clogging and overheating during metalworking operations.

Masonry drill bits – often carbide-tipped for concrete and stone drilling – are the hardest. They have the widest point angle, typically over 135°. The tip is not very sharp but has a certain width, giving greater stability when drilling into stone, concrete blocks, or brick walls.
