Unlike traditional straight knives, FHONK Carbide Indexable Helical Inserts feature an individual square-block geometry.

Each insert carries four cutting edges and is precisely positioned along a helical line on the cutterhead.

In operation, only a single edge engages the workpiece. When that edge dulls, there is no need to remove the cutterhead or recalibrate tool height.

The operator simply loosens the locking screw, rotates the insert 90 degrees in place, and re-tightens—an entirely new, razor-sharp edge is ready for immediate production.

The cycle repeats until all four edges are consumed. Only then is the entire insert discarded and replaced with a fresh one. Throughout the process, the cutterhead remains mounted, tool height stays set, and machine downtime is held to under one minute.

The impact goes well beyond speed. Surface finish quality improves markedly, while the shop floor’s dependence on highly skilled technicians drops. The helical arrangement further distributes cutting forces evenly and reduces noise, making the system particularly well-suited to high-speed, continuous-duty applications.
